Rest These Bones
by: Katie Roche
"Rest These Bones came out in one breath, one burst of inspiration after reading a letter from Lois Pavelka of Pavelka Point Meats. In her letter to Awful Purdies she talked about her life on the farm with her husband Bill Ellison in Mt. Vernon, IA and this song honoring hard work emerged. The line “The more we know, the less we speak” had been looking for a home for a long time, liberally translated from Voltaire’s Candide, in french “Qui plus sait, plus se tait”. The sentiment seemed to be a good description of the economical way of communicating I encountered when talking to the many Iowa farmers we met along the way of making this album."

Rest these bones, when the sun sleeps
works never done
More we grow, the less we keep
when the season comes
Tired body...
quiet that mind
Work these bones, while the sun keeps
Her light shining on
More we know, the less we speak
when the work is done
Tired body...
quiet that mind
Rest these bones, when the sun sleeps
works never done
More we grow, the less we keep
when the season comes
Tired body...
quiet that mind
