TUBE TOP AND A SHOVEL

by: Sarah Cram

"We were thinking and writing about food and I knew I wanted to write a song about canning, because I enjoy it so much.  Canning the food you’ve grown is like the little party you have celebrating the fruits of your labor.  I almost waited too long to write the song, it barely made it in the play.  About an hour before our first performance in Decorah, playwright Sean Lewis said “Let’s make the Canning Song the opening number.”  I was so excited but I think we were all a little nervous, because we never really worked it up completely."

We spent most of the Summertime relaxing
relaxing, relaxing in the sun
in the sun, it was fun, it was fun
but now it’s time to get work done.

The time has come in August to save what we want to eat
bring your good stories, I swear I’ll make it sweet!

Put your goods away
the harvest of the today
spend some time together while we can

Back when I pressed these seeds into the soil
I didn’t know, didn’t know what would grow
just a tube top, a tube top and a shovel
there’s always so much more to know

There’s a risk you're taking
who knows what it will be
but if you dig a little deeper
you will see

put your goods away
the harvest of today
spend some time together while we can

There’s something that’s pure magic
and it brings such satisfaction
it is truly part of living off the land

put your goods away
the harvest of today
spend some time together while we can!
